A 20‑minute boat ride from Stone Town takes you to Changuu Island – better known as Prison Island. Despite its name, the prison was never really used for inmates. Instead, the island became a quarantine station for yellow fever, and later a sanctuary for giant Aldabra tortoises.
Meeting the Giants
Over 100 tortoises roam freely. Some are more than 150 years old. You can feed them (with the right leaves) and watch them lumber across the grass. It’s a peaceful, almost prehistoric scene.
Snorkeling & Beach
The island is surrounded by a coral reef, perfect for snorkeling. You’ll see colourful fish, starfish, and sometimes small rays. The beach on the east side is quiet and ideal for a swim after walking the island.
A dark history
The old prison building is still there. It was used to hold rebellious slaves in the late 19th century. Walking through it is a sobering reminder of Zanzibar’s past. But today, the island is a place of conservation and calm.
Plan your visit: Go early to beat the crowds. Wear reef‑safe sunscreen, bring water, and don’t forget your camera. The tortoises love having their pictures taken – or so it seems!
Prison Island is a half‑day trip that combines nature, history, and relaxation. It’s a must‑see for anyone visiting Zanzibar.
